I have over 30 years of experience working as a manager and human resource professional in both unionized and non-unionized settings. I believe that people go to work to do a good job.
Business writers in many bureaucracies (and businesses), are trained to use a ‘passive voice’ when writing corporate or program policies and procedures. The use of 1st and 2nd person pronouns is rare and often jargon and acronyms are used extensively. This style of writing can lead to misunderstandings, even for those who have read the document from beginning to end.
Throughout 2017 and into 2018, I completed the Plain Language Writing Certificate Program through Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. This program solidified my commitment to improving communication within an organization.
By applying Plain Language writing and design principles, I believe we can help more readers understand written information. This will lead to improved workplace productivity and increased program participation.
Examples of my work:
writing policies, guidelines, process flowcharts and checklists, programs and program information
strategic human resource planning
labour relations, including collective bargaining and conducting investigations
job evaluation and recruitment
developing and delivering experiential based adult training programs
